Diesel Powered Air Compressors for Power and Flexibility

!: Diesel Powered Air Compressors for Power and Flexibility

Air compressors are a very common piece of equipment found in residential as well as commercial garages. They convert electrical power, gas or diesel into kinetic energy. It pressurizes and compresses the air. The machine will then release the air in quick bursts. The diesel powered air compressor is one of the most popular types of compressors. They are great for any job but perform very well on heavy duty projects. Because they do not have cords or require electricity there is no limit to the locations and jobs they can be used for.

Contractors love the towable diesel powered air compressor. Towable compressors are mounted on wheels and have a tow hitch that makes them simple to hook up and move to the necessary location. An example of a towable diesel is the LeRoi Portable Compressor 185 CFM Diesel. It operates at 100 psi at 2250 rpm's with a tank capacity of 32 gallons. The abbreviations help to determine the rating. CFM represents cubic feet per minute. That's the amount of air the compressor takes in per minute. The higher the CFM the faster and more powerful the unit is. The psi is the pounds per square inch. The psi is a factor in the CFM.

The tank capacity is the number of gallons that the tank can hold. The larger the tank the higher the pressure can be maintained. Another abbreviation associated with a diesel powered air compressor is the horsepower. You will see small compressors such as the Champion VR5-8 with a horsepower as low as 5 up to models made by companies such as Sanborn/Coleman that can run into the hundreds range. This all depends on what the compressor is being used for. It is important to remember that more horsepower does not mean more air, horsepower is all about power.

Proper maintenance is an important aspect to keep your diesel powered air compressor in top notch condition. Whether your generator is small for home use or the best selling tractor PTO compressor in the world, it is critical to keep it well tuned up. Something as simple as loose screws can cause expensive repairs. Basic maintenance includes things such as oil levels, belt tension, blow out coolers, air leak detection, electrical connections, condenser and oil and filter changes. With simple preventive and routine care your compressor will last for years.

Three Phase Generators - Their History and Why They Work So Well

!: Three Phase Generators - Their History and Why They Work So Well

The three phase generator you need for your workshop has a long and very interesting history. They were invented just a few decades after electricity was first controlled and managed in machines by Faraday in the 1820s. From that time until the middle of the 1900s the changing of direct current to alternating current was achieved using rotary generators.

Early on these converters used a synchronous or induction AC motor connected up to a generator. The link was made in such a way that the dynamo's commutator reversed it's shiny connector plates at precisely the right time to generated direct current.

This worked perfectly well, although there is always room for improvement and after some time the synchronous converter was developed by enterprising engineers. In these advanced converters the windings on the motor and generator were combined in one armature. At one end this was gripped by slip rings, at the other a commutator was positioned and both relating to just one field frame. As a result alternating current went in and direct current went out.

About mid-way through the period we are describing, in the early 1900s, vacuum tubes or tubes packed with gas were adapted and used as switches in these converter's circuits.

The rotary generators of these machines were often called M-G sets. Something interesting is possible with these sets. The direct current can be said to be generated independently from the alternating current. This is distinct from the current produced by synchronous converters where it can be said that they output alternating current that has been "rectified" by a physical mechanism. So, if you put in place the correct auxiliary and controllers, an M-G set rotary converter can be made to turn "backwards" ie., turning AC into DC. This is where we get our modern term inverted converter.

From this elementary beginning we now have phase converters that will take direct current from batteries, solar panels or fuel cells and turn that into alternating current running at any voltage. So equipment designed to be plugged into a mains power socket can run on there storage devices. Or conversely they can be rectified to output direct current at a particular voltage.

The humble three phase generator is a reliable workhorse.

Power Generator Testing: What Are The Main Causes for Breaker Problems?

!: Power Generator Testing: What Are The Main Causes for Breaker Problems?

Any standby power generator needs adequate maintenance to remain in top running condition. Testing allows service professionals to determine any weaknesses or developing problems with a commercial secondary source. Transfer switches, switchgear, load capacity, circuits, lubrication, and operational performance are among the many items a technician may evaluate during a typical preventative maintenance visit. An infrared scan of the entire system may be run to identify failing components, overloads, load imbalances, and existing connection problems. The time required to complete this scan is determined by facility size. A smaller facility may be completed within a day whereas larger ones could take two to three.

Additional non-invasive tests may be run on individual components such as breakers to identify problems and evaluate their performance. Dependable professionals will follow the recommendations of the manufacturer along with their own power generator testing protocols.

Breaker Testing: A Critical Part of Generator Maintenance

Breakers are an electrical switch designed to protect individual circuits from being damaged. Harm may be caused by a current overload or the shorting of a circuit. When a fault is detected between connectors, electrical flow may be halted until the problem is resolved. An overload occurs when the supplied electrical flow is higher than what should be coming in. The breaker stops flow by flipping to an off position in order to prevent circuit damage. Loose connections can be another cause for overloading and are required to be checked on a generator during routine maintenance. Breaker testing identifies possible causes for overloading which allows the technician to complete the necessary repairs. Short circuits happen when two hot wires of the same type or in combination with a neutral wire touch. Wire breaks are also a possible cause of circuit issues. Ground faults where the hot wire touches either the breaker box metal or the ground wire are another type of short circuit situation.

Breakers are current limiters which monitor the flow of a particular circuit. They include a spring loaded switch and a bimetallic strip. Overheating due to various reasons makes the strip bend so the switch can be tripped. This portion is designed to handle small surges while an additional component provides faster switching during a large surge. It consists of an electromagnet with wire loops surrounding an iron piece. When a large surge happens, the strip is pulled down almost instantaneously to provide immediate protection.

Breaker testing ensures interior components are in good working order and functioning as designed. It can drastically reduce the chances of a tripped breaker when the secondary power source is required. Insulation, contact, and connection resistance are among the many factors tested during a visit. Contacts may need to be adjusted or replaced on individual breakers. All parts are cleaned, lubricated, and replaced or repaired if needed. Any business relying on a secondary source for supplied power should have regular power generator testing and maintenance performed. Generator efficiency is greatly hindered when suggested care is not completed. The system may not kick on in an emergency or outage situation. A preventative maintenance schedule is the best way to increase the dependability of any backup system.

iMatch Fast Hitch For Your Tractor

!: iMatch Fast Hitch For Your Tractor

A professional tool in business is a mans best friend. When you need to get a job done right you do it yourself or with the aid of a trusty tool or heavy machinery. The list of names can go on, but in truth, this machine is your tractor, and, dependent on the attachments you use, it can transform into just about any sort of professional quality out of doors tool you need. The key is finding the right attachments. When you match the right tractor with the right attachments, you get a useful multi-purpose tool that makes outside chores go quicker, and better more enjoyable. Many ways to figure out if your tractor is capable of operating attachments are: 8226, PTO ( Power Take Off horsepower ) rather than engine horsepower-is a good measure of a tractor's true capacities to handle attachments.

If you're working with attachments or implements that need frequent changes in direction or speed, you might need to consider a tractor that has got a more user friendly transmission, for example a hydrostatic or power reverser. The bigger the GPM ( gallons per minute ), the better the hydraulic power. A tandem hydraulic pump provides power to both the steering and implements without stealing power from the other. For example, John Deere offers the "iMatch Fast Hitch" on its tractors.

This cutting edge and reasonable feature permits operators to simply connect attachments to their tractor without leaving the operator seat. Simply back up your tractor and slide on the PTO shaft. And for clients owning a John Deere tractor with iMatch, nearly all these implements and attachments are iMatch compatible. Off-brand implements and attachments can work too but there are some potential problems. Remember, you get what you pay for.

How to Choose an Ice Cream Truck or Ice Cream Trailer

!: How to Choose an Ice Cream Truck or Ice Cream Trailer

Getting into a mobile ice ream business can be confusing and overwhelming. There are so many options and not a lot of answers. When choosing a manufacture of ice cream trucks or trailers there are many factors which should be considered before making such a large investment.

Some key factors should be taken for consideration.

1. What kind of equipment is going into the truck? Being that your business is based on selling ice cream, you should want reputable ice cream equipment manufacture. Having any old machine just won't do. You should be looking at a machine that will keep up with demand, produce a consistent, quality product. This could mean the difference between repeat customers or turning customers away because you can't keep up with the demand. Have a look around at some national chains that serve frozen desserts. Those companies have spent hours or testing and countless dollars in research to make sure they have the best equipment and the most reliable service.

2. What kind of service can you get AFTER you purchase the ice cream truck or trailer? Make sure you are going to get service wherever you go. Ice cream machines can not be fixed by just any local refrigeration company. You might be traveling to different locations sometimes in different states. Find out how you will get service on weekends, nights, days and holidays. Will they come to you, or do you need to bring the vehicle to them? Will the service company have parts readily available or will you have to wait for them to be ordered?

3. How comfortable is the working area? You will be working in this area for long hours and mostly on nice days. Is there ample air conditioning? Is there an actual air conditioner that will keep up in hot humid conditions or they trying to use the vehicles air conditioner thinking it will keep up. Can you fit more then one person in the working area. Sometimes you will need help, especially if you plan on working heavy traffic venues like sporting events, music festival, air shows... Size matters! Don't be fooled that the smaller the vehicles will be more versatile. You will need space for inventory, extra mix, and supplies. Make sure there is ample refrigeration and Storage space.

4. Is there room for growing? when you first start out, usually there is a budget. But, as your company grows so will your menu. You should make sure there is room for other products to be added. Enough electrical outlets for additional equipment. Most commercial equipment can not run on power inverter. You will need to make sure there is "real" power available.

5. How is this ice cream equipment going to run? Find out if the equipment is going to run on a PTO (power take off) or generator? A power take off is limited to the vehicle engine power. This means that you will need to run the vehicles engine to make the ice cream equipment work. Think about would you really want to put extra strain on the one thing that is going to get you from location to location. If your vehicle engine stops working, you are out of business! You are also limited on power with a PTO, the engine can only put out so much electric, therefore leaving you a limited amount of "real" electricity and not much room for adding more equipment later on. Most PTO's require a belt driven compressor. When is the last time you've seen a belt driven air conditioner? This would mean a special order compressor if it was ever to go bad and furthermore you would be out of business waiting for the part. Generators nowadays are fuel efficient and very quiet. choosing a truck with generator would be worth your investment.

6. Franchise or Independent? Choosing a franchise has its pros but it also has its cons. Having a well know name is great for an instant customer base. But you will pay for that customer base. Typically most franchises will take up to 38% of your profits right off the top. that means before you take your salary or wages. They make you purchase their products, give you a "route" or "territory", and make you pitch in for advertising costs. being an independent company allows you to choose your company name, purchase your inventory where you want, (allowing you to get the best price to make the most profit), take your business wherever you'd like (as long as you have the proper permits), spend as little or as much as you like for advertising and most important, you keep ALL the profits!

Hope this helps and good luck at your new business venture!
